{"id":338,"date":"2013-09-21T09:03:26","date_gmt":"2013-09-21T09:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stephanie-blog.co.uk\/?p=338"},"modified":"2013-09-17T19:03:44","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T19:03:44","slug":"s-is-for-shopping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.stephanie-blog.co.uk\/?p=338","title":{"rendered":"S is for Shopping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post is something I wrote back in 2001, in response to a writing group challenge to write a &#8216;list poem&#8217; (which this isn&#8217;t), the content of which is still just as relevant (though I don&#8217;t thing Nestle own Branston any more and I probably wouldn&#8217;t be buying chicken these days having been 99.9% vegetarian since about the date this was written).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shopping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do we need to buy this week?<br \/>\nOr should that be,<br \/>\nWhat do we <strong>want<\/strong> to buy this week?<br \/>\nLet me just see.<\/p>\n<p>Fruit and veg first:<br \/>\nBananas<br \/>\nShould they be ripe for eating now,<br \/>\nOr rather green to last the week.<br \/>\nShould I buy Fairtrade,<br \/>\nOr is organic healthier?<br \/>\nDo the fairtraders use pesticides?<\/p>\n<p>Apples<br \/>\nThat\u2019s easier &#8211;<br \/>\nEnglish ones are in season,<br \/>\nAnd taste the best too.<br \/>\nShouldn\u2019t be too many food miles<br \/>\nIn a Cox\u2019s pippin.<\/p>\n<p>What else for variety?<br \/>\nShare the culture of our neighbours<br \/>\nAnd choose rambutan or mango?<br \/>\nOr think of the food miles,<br \/>\nAnd choose English pears?<br \/>\nAlthough seedless grapes are<br \/>\nvery cheap this week&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Vegetables now.<br \/>\nCarrots first.<br \/>\nEconomy to save money.<br \/>\nOr organic with no need to<br \/>\npeel away the pesticide residue.<br \/>\nOrganic taste better too.<\/p>\n<p>Turnips?
